South Africa Reaffirms Commitment to Climate Action with BASIC Partners

South Africa assures its BASIC partners — Brazil, South Africa, India, and China — of its unwavering support for global climate change efforts. New Environment Minister Dr Dion George emphasizes South Africa's commitment to the UNFCCC and Paris Agreement and calls for stronger international support from developed nations.

South Africa has reassured its BASIC partners, including India, that it remains fully committed to addressing global climate change issues.

The BASIC countries, comprising Brazil, South Africa, India, and China, form a strategic bloc of newly industrialized nations.

During the BASIC Ministerial Meeting on Climate Change in Wuhan, newly-appointed Minister of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment, Dr Dion George, reiterated South Africa's steadfast solidarity with the global South. He emphasized that the BASIC group is pivotal in advocating for a sustainable and equitable international order.

George assured that South Africa is committed to honoring its commitments under the UNFCCC and Paris Agreement, working on its second Nationally Determined Contribution. He highlighted the nation's ambition to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through initiatives like the Just Energy Transition Investment Plan.

Calling for international cooperation, George highlighted that developed countries must support developing nations for the Paris Agreement to be effective. He stressed that there should be no backtracking on support obligations by the global North.

George also discussed the challenges faced by the BASIC countries, urging them to unite in achieving their climate goals.
