G20 Finance Leaders Boost Global Economic Optimism Amid Geopolitical Tensions
The G20 finance leaders anticipate a potential soft landing for the global economy, avoiding recession but warning of ongoing risks like escalating conflicts and persistent inflation. The draft communique stresses economic cooperation, IMF reforms, and a progressive tax system, while downplaying geopolitical tensions to streamline focus on global economic issues.
The G20 finance leaders are expected to welcome the increasing chances of a global economic "soft landing" while warning of risks arising from ongoing "wars and escalating conflicts," a draft communique obtained by Reuters on Tuesday revealed. The finance ministers and central bank heads convening in Rio de Janeiro this week still intend to highlight the risks of an uneven global recovery dependent on persistent inflation, the document noted.
"We are encouraged by the increasing likelihood of a soft landing of the global economy, although multiple challenges remain," the draft communique said. Diplomats aim to sidestep disagreements over Ukraine and Gaza to avoid another breakdown in consensus among finance chiefs as seen in February.
The communique, subject to ongoing negotiations, emphasizes economic cooperation to address global poverty, climate change, and debt crises in poorer nations, according to individuals familiar with the drafting process. Brazilian negotiators last week led an agreement to exclude geopolitical debates, focusing instead on economic unity.
