Taiwan hunkered down on Wednesday in anticipation of a strengthening Typhoon Gaemi, leading to the shutdown of financial markets, flight cancellations, and one fatality. Torrential rain prompted the military to go on stand-by.

Gaemi, predicted to be Taiwan’s strongest storm in eight years, was set to make landfall on the northeast coast late Wednesday, while the Taiwan Strait crossing is expected to hit Fujian, China, by Thursday afternoon.

One person died in Kaohsiung, and another 58 were injured, according to fire department reports. Premier Cho Jung-tai described the next 24 hours as a severe challenge. Major disruptions also hit Yilan county and Taipei, with evacuations, flight cancellations, and suspended rail operations dominating the response.
