In a major stride towards developing Indigenous technology, the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), a leading Telecom R&D center under the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), has signed a groundbreaking agreement with the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) and Indian Institute of Technology Mandi (IIT Mandi) for the development of 'Cell-Free' 6G Access Points. This collaboration marks a significant advancement in the country's pursuit of next-generation communication technologies.

The agreement, facilitated under the Telecom Technology Development Fund (TTDF) scheme of the DoT, aims to support domestic technology innovation by funding Indian startups, companies, academia, and R&D institutions involved in telecommunications. The TTDF scheme is designed to promote affordable broadband and mobile services, thereby bridging the digital divide across India.

Unlike traditional mobile networks that rely on cellular topologies with single base stations serving each cell, the 'Cell-Free' Massive MIMO (Multiple-Input Multiple-Output) technology eliminates cell boundaries. By deploying numerous access points (APs) across large areas, this technology provides continuous connectivity, eliminates dead zones, enhances signal strength, and significantly increases data speeds. This results in an exceptional user experience, especially in densely populated regions.

The 6G project will focus on developing APs to enable future 6G radio access networks. It also aims to contribute to 6G standardization, drive commercialization, generate intellectual property rights (IPRs), and develop a skilled workforce for the emerging 6G ecosystem.

The agreement signing ceremony, attended by key figures including Dr. Rajkumar Upadhyay, CEO of C-DOT, Dr. Abhay Kumar Sah from IIT Roorkee, Dr. Adarsh Patel from IIT Mandi, and Dr. Pankaj Kumar Dalela, Director of C-DOT, highlighted the collaborative effort's significance. Dr. Sah and Dr. Patel reaffirmed their commitment to advancing next-generation communication technologies, aligning with the Bharat 6G Vision launched by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. They expressed their appreciation for the support from the DoT and C-DOT, emphasizing the initiative's role in enhancing research capabilities and infrastructure in the telecom sector.

Dr. Rajkumar Upadhyay emphasized the importance of indigenously developed technologies in meeting India's unique communication needs and reaffirmed the commitment to the "Atmanirbhar Bharat" (Self-Reliant India) vision. He noted that this collaboration will help generate valuable IPRs in the 6G domain and emerging technologies.

The representatives from C-DOT, IIT Roorkee, and IIT Mandi expressed their enthusiasm for the collaborative effort, underlining their dedication to shaping India's 6G vision and contributing to the country's technological advancement.
