Balkans Battle Blazes Amid Heat Waves

Balkan countries are struggling against wildfires fueled by high temperatures, winds, and drought. Over the past 24 hours, Croatia and North Macedonia faced significant challenges, prompting calls for international assistance. Residents have been evacuated, and emergency forces remain on alert as efforts to control the fires continue.

Balkan nations faced a fierce battle against wildfires on Wednesday, driven by extreme heat, winds, and prolonged drought. Croatian firefighters described the last 24 hours as the season's most demanding, with over 100 emergencies involving 1,000 firefighters and 20 aircraft.

North Macedonia experienced 66 wildfires in just one day, prompting the emergency chief to suggest seeking NATO's help. In Croatia's Tucepi, one firefighter was injured, residents faced evacuations, and power cuts illuminated the night sky with explosions, likely from gas canisters.

Despite the chaos, efforts have made headway. North of Sibenik, firefighters aimed to protect Krka National Park, which remained open thanks to community efforts. Nations like Bulgaria and Albania have also turned to international aid. Experts attribute this escalation to human-induced climate change, leading to extreme and unpredictable weather patterns.
