Two Landslides in Puttur Disrupt Traffic, Damage Homes

Two landslides occurred on the Puttur By-pass Road and in Bellippadi Andhrigeri village. The first landslide disrupted traffic on National Highway 275, while the second caused severe damage to homes and a cowshed, resulting in the death of four cows. Officials are working on clearing the debris.

A landslide struck on Puttur By-pass Road, also known as Bantwal-Mysuru road and National Highway 275, officials confirmed on Friday.

Local sources indicated the landslide occurred around 3 am, forcing vehicles destined for Mysuru and Mangaluru to reroute through Puttur town.

According to police reports, no individuals or vehicles were trapped in the landslide. Barricades have been set up at both approaches to the landslide site, diverting traffic through Puttur city. City police have also implemented measures to manage the traffic flow.

The State Highways Department deployed excavation machinery and workers to commence the debris clearance at 8 am.

The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre has forecasted further rainfall in the coastal and interior coastal regions, potentially impacting the clearance efforts.

In a separate incident, another landslide occurred at Bellippadi Andhrigeri village in Puttur at 4:30 am, resulting in significant damage to two houses and a cowshed, killing four cows trapped under the rubble.

According to Purandhara Tahsildar of Puttur taluk, a section of the hill behind the affected houses and cowshed collapsed, burying the structures under tons of soil.

Fire service personnel working at the site were unable to retrieve the carcasses due to the risk of further collapse. An excavator was brought in to assist with the recovery.
