In the wake of destructive landslides in Wayanad, a group of ham radio enthusiasts set up a vital communication network, aiding rescue operations and saving lives. Their efforts, coordinated from the District Collector's office, have provided critical information to authorities and affected communities, facilitating effective disaster response.

As devastating landslides ravaged a hilly area of Wayanad, a group of ham radio enthusiasts established a critical communication network that has been instrumental in saving lives and supporting rescue efforts.

Set up by volunteer operators at the District Collector's office in Kalpetta, the amateur radio system has been providing vital information to affected communities and authorities. This has significantly facilitated rescue and relief operations.

'The situation was dire, with mobile phone services available only to a very limited extent,' an official release stated on Saturday. 'District Collector D R Meghashree reached out to the ham radio operators, and they have been instrumental in keeping the lines of communication open.'

Using receivers, amplifiers, computers for logging and digital modulation, and other equipment, the operators transmit information from the disaster area. A repeater setup at Ambalavayal Ponmudi Kotta, installed by the Sultan Bathery DX Association, enhances communication.

Led by Sabu Mathew and Dr Abraham Jacob, the ham radio operators have ensured timely transmission of information to authorities, accompanying rescue teams and providing real-time updates.
