Dharavi Gets a Boost: Residents Support $3-Billion Redevelopment Plan

Residents of Dharavi, Asia's largest slum, support a government-led survey essential for a $3-billion redevelopment project by the Adani group. The survey aims to map informal tenements and determine eligibility for new housing. Local support for the project is growing, promising significant improvements in living conditions and infrastructure.

In a significant boost to the redevelopment of Asia's biggest slum, a newly formed association of Dharavi residents has endorsed the ongoing state government-led survey of informal tenements, a crucial step for the $3-billion project by the Adani group that aims to improve the lives of about one million residents.

''We request the survey be conducted at the earliest possible time to ensure that the redevelopment can move forward without further delays,'' wrote the Citizen and Society Development Welfare body of Dharavi residents to SVR Srinivas, CEO of the Dharavi Redevelopment Project/Slum Rehabilitation Authority (DRP/SRA), on July 30.

Representatives of the welfare body, who champion the Dharavi Banao Andolan, met with Srinivas and submitted a memorandum seeking the rapid completion of the survey.
