Devastating Rain Triggers Landslides and Flash Floods in Himachal Pradesh

Recent heavy rains have resulted in landslides and flash floods in Himachal Pradesh, closing over 280 roads and displacing many residents. Rescue operations continue to locate around 30 missing individuals. The state has reported over 100 deaths and significant economic losses. The regional meteorological office has issued an orange alert for further heavy rainfall.

Himachal Pradesh has been severely hit by landslides and flash floods following two days of heavy rain, resulting in the closure of more than 280 roads, officials reported. Water from overflowing streams infiltrated homes in Una, prompting the Lahaul and Spiti police to advise extreme caution, particularly around the rapidly rising Jahalman Nallah.

Rescue teams are working diligently to locate approximately 30 people still missing after the flash floods on July 31 in the districts of Kullu, Mandi, and Shimla. So far, 28 bodies have been recovered, according to authorities.

The relentless rains have claimed over 100 lives and inflicted approximately Rs 842 crore in damages from June 27 to August 9. Road closures have been extensive, with Mandi, Shimla, and Kullu among the hardest-hit areas. Flash floods and landslides have also disrupted power and water supplies.

The local meteorological office issued an orange alert on Sunday, warning of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and potential damage to crops and vulnerable structures. Despite a rainfall deficit of 28 percent so far this monsoon season, the state continues to battle severe weather conditions.
