The government is ramping up aid for farmers grappling with the ongoing drought in North Canterbury, Rural Communities Minister Mark Patterson announced today.
The severe lack of rain has left farms struggling with feed shortages, causing pasture and crops to fail. “Prolonged dry weather and challenging financial conditions have made circumstances extremely tough for farmers in the Hurunui District,” Mr. Patterson said.
Farmers have been employing various strategies, such as reducing livestock numbers, to manage the drought's impact. However, with lambing and calving seasons underway, additional one-off support has become crucial.
During a visit to affected farms, Mr. Patterson revealed that the government is allocating $20,000 for immediate assistance. This is complemented by an additional $18,000 from the Farmers Adverse Events Trust, the Veterinary Association, and Boehringer Ingelheim to provide specialized veterinary support to those in need. Additionally, $30,000 will be directed to the Hurunui Mayoral Fund to ensure targeted help reaches the most critically affected farmers.
This latest funding boost follows earlier support provided this year. In March, the extreme dry conditions were classified as a medium-scale adverse event, unlocking approximately $170,000 in extra funding for Rural Support Trusts to offer early assistance to affected farmers.
“Tax relief is also available through the Income Equalisation Scheme, which helps with on-farm cash flow,” Mr. Patterson noted. The Ministry for Primary Industries' On Farm Support service will continue to collaborate with farmers and growers to assess ongoing support needs.
Farmers in the district needing help are encouraged to contact their local Rural Support Trust at 0800 787 254.
