Raksha Rajya Mantri Shri Sanjay Seth has called on industry partners to contribute towards making India not only fully self-sufficient (Aatmanirbhar) in defense production but also a net exporter of defense equipment. He made this appeal during the launch of the first indigenously built Pollution Control Vessel (PCV), named 'Samudra Pratap,' in Goa on August 29, 2024. The vessel, constructed by Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) for the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), is designed to tackle oil spills along India's coastline.

The ship was officially launched and named by Smt. Neeta Seth in the presence of Shri Sanjay Seth, who emphasized the nation's progress under Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi's leadership. "It is heartening to note that the country has become Aatmanirbhar in shipbuilding for defense needs and has even started building ships for other countries," Shri Seth remarked, highlighting India's growth as the world's fifth-largest economy.

GSL, a premier Indian shipyard, has signed a contract to construct two Pollution Control Vessels for the Indian Coast Guard at a cost of Rs 583 Crores. This marks the first time these vessels have been designed and built indigenously. The 'Samudra Pratap,' designed and constructed in-house by GSL, boasts a length of 114.5 meters, a breadth of 16.5 meters, and a displacement of 4,170 tons. The keel laying ceremony for the ship took place on November 21, 2022.

The launch event was attended by Shri Brajesh Kumar Upadhyaya, Chairman and Managing Director of GSL, alongside officials from the Ministry of Defence, Indian Coast Guard, Indian Navy, and Goa Shipyard Ltd.

‘Samudra Pratap’ stands as a testament to India's growing shipbuilding capabilities, solidifying Goa Shipyard Limited's position among Indian shipyards capable of producing state-of-the-art Pollution Control Vessels.
