About 20 cows died under suspicious circumstances on Monday in a 'gaushala' in Haryana's Uncha village, while 10 more are in critical condition, according to police reports.
The exact cause of the deaths at the 'Nandigram Gaushala' remains unknown, with post-mortem examinations yet to be conducted, officials said.
A team of doctors is currently treating the critically ill cows, the police confirmed.
Rupesh Yadav, a worker at the cow shelter, noted that the cows appeared fine until the previous evening but were found dead early the next morning.
Veterinary doctor Deepak Arya, who examined the cows, said the exact cause of death will be revealed only after the post mortem. He added that the recent rains and resulting cold could have contributed to the fatalities.
