A controversy has erupted in Mumbai over the transfer of 256 acres of ecologically sensitive salt pan land in Kanjurmarg to the Adani Group for the Dharavi Redevelopment Project. This decision has been met with severe criticism from the Congress party, which accused the BJP-led Centre of exhibiting double standards and disrespecting federalism.

In a post on X, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh claimed that the salt pans serve as crucial flood buffers during Mumbai's monsoon seasons. He alleged that the land transfer benefits private business interests at the cost of the city's long-term environmental sustainability.

Ramesh also suggested that the redevelopment decision goes against the wishes of Dharavi residents, who prefer in-situ relocation. He condemned the expedited approval process by the Mahayuti government, pointing out an earlier rejection of the same land for a Mumbai Metro 3 carshed on grounds he called flimsy. With assembly elections approaching, the controversy underscores the political debate over land use priorities in Mumbai.
