Hurricane Oscar Threatens the Bahamas and Eastern Cuba

The Bahamas and parts of eastern Cuba are on alert as Hurricane Oscar gathers strength. The National Hurricane Center reported Oscar's position southeast of the Bahamas, with maximum winds of 80 mph. Heavy rain and potential flooding are forecasted for the Turks and Caicos and eastern Cuba by Sunday.

The government of the Bahamas has issued a hurricane warning for Tropical Storm Oscar, which has rapidly intensified. The U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) confirmed the development on Saturday.

Oscar, currently positioned about 165 miles east-southeast of the Bahamas and approximately 470 miles from Camaguey, Cuba, is generating winds up to 80 miles per hour. The Cuban government has also initiated a Hurricane Watch for the provinces of Guantanamo, Holguin, and Las Tunas as they brace for potential impact.

The NHC advisory predicts that the storm will bring locally heavy rainfall as it travels. The Turks and Caicos islands, as well as the southeastern Bahamas, could experience significant precipitation on Saturday, with conditions expected to extend to eastern Cuba by Sunday.
