Uttar Pradesh Faces an Unusual Cold Spell: An In-Depth Look

Uttar Pradesh is experiencing an unusual cold spell with temperatures dropping significantly below normal. The Met office explains that stable conditions in the lower troposphere are minimizing the temperature difference between day and night. Cold winds from the mountainous regions contribute to the chill, expected to last until Wednesday.

Large areas of Uttar Pradesh are grappling with an unexpected cold spell, as temperatures have plummeted more than 5 degrees Celsius below normal in at least 50 districts, according to the Met office on Tuesday.

This cold wave is anticipated to prolong its grip on the region until Wednesday, bringing chilly weather conditions to a standstill. Minimum temperatures were logged at 13 degrees Celsius, with day temperatures hovering around 15 degrees Celsius.

Senior scientist Atul Kumar Singh from the Met office in Lucknow attributes this anomaly to stable conditions in the lower troposphere, which are blocking radiational heating during the day and cooling at night. As a result, the typical temperature difference between day and night has significantly narrowed. Singh noted that cold northwestern winds from mountainous areas are intensifying daytime chills while nighttime temperatures remain higher than usual. Local officials advise citizens to take necessary precautions, particularly at night, as the cold conditions are set to continue until the fog layer lifts with the next western disturbance.
