India reported a significant reduction in its greenhouse gas emissions for the year 2020, registering a 7.93% decrease compared to 2019 figures, as per the latest submission to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
The country's fourth Biennial Update Report (BUR-4) revealed a 36% decline in GDP emission intensity from 2005 to 2020, signifying a progressive decoupling of economic growth from emission levels.
Despite the decrease, India's total emissions in 2020 amounted to 2,959 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent, excluding land use and forestry changes. The energy sector was the largest contributor, accounting for 75.66% of emissions, highlighting the challenge of balancing energy needs with climate goals.
