Asteroid Alert: Tracking 2024 YR4's Celestial Dance

Scientists are closely monitoring asteroid 2024 YR4, which has a 2% chance of hitting Earth in 2032. Initial tracking was done by a Chilean telescope and further observations by the Webb Space Telescope are planned. Experts assure the odds might decrease and no immediate concern is necessary.

Amid global concern, scientists are diligently tracking the newly discovered asteroid 2024 YR4, whose odds of striking Earth in 2032 currently stand at 2%. This minuscule chance has prompted intensified surveillance from telescopes worldwide, yet experts emphasize that the possibility remains slim.

Discovered in December by a Chilean telescope, 2024 YR4 is estimated to be between 130 to 300 feet in size. NASA, working alongside the European Space Agency, continues to adjust these estimates as better data becomes available. Notably, the Webb Space Telescope will undertake detailed observations in March.

Officials assure the public that it’s premature to worry, echoing the views of Larry Denneau from the University of Hawaii, and Paul Chodas of NASA. Both anticipate that further analysis will likely reduce the perceived risk of impact, likening it to past assessments where threats have been nullified after deeper investigation.
