Nehru Zoo Suspends Chicken Supply Amid Avian Flu Concerns

Nehru Zoological Park has stopped providing chicken and eggs to its carnivores due to avian flu fears in neighboring regions. The zoo's animals are now fed alternative meats. Telangana has enhanced inspections and bio-security measures at state borders to prevent the spread of the disease.

Nehru Zoological Park has taken a significant step in halting the supply of chicken and eggs to its carnivorous residents, citing precautionary concerns amid reports of avian influenza in nearby states. This decision comes as part of broader efforts to safeguard zoo animals and mitigate potential health risks.

Among the affected are formidable carnivores such as tigers, lions, panthers, and jaguars, who were previously rationed 35 kgs of chicken and about 140 eggs daily. Zoo authorities have shifted their diet to include mutton, beef, and pork, ensuring nutritional needs are met while eliminating the risk of infection.

Telangana state has responded robustly to the threat of avian flu by stepping up bio-security measures and strict border checks, predominantly targeting the poultry sector. Recent reports from Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra highlight massive culls of chickens, underpinning the urgency of these protective actions.
