Cyclone Zelia Disrupts Operations at Western Australia's Key Ports

Western Australia's ports of Dampier and Varanus Island have reopened after Tropical Cyclone Zelia, a category five storm, hit the Pilbara region. The storm caused disruptions, temporarily shutting down major ports and affecting operations of key mining companies. Port Hedland remains closed while the region recovers.

The ports of Dampier and Varanus Island in Western Australia have resumed operations after the onslaught of Tropical Cyclone Zelia, according to the ports' operator. Zelia, hitting the Pilbara with severe force, is the most significant storm since Cyclone Ilsa in April 2023.

Pilbara Ports confirmed late Friday that after thorough inspections of navigation aids, channels, and berths, the ports were deemed safe to operate. Zelia, which brought heavy rain and wind gusts of up to 290 kph, led to the closure of the world's largest iron ore hub, Port Hedland, on Wednesday, and other key ports like Cape Lambert.

Although the cyclone weakened as it moved inland and was downgraded to a tropical low, it still prompted emergency warnings. Heavy rains have increased water levels, and some areas remain cut off, while companies assess damage and plan to resume normal operations swiftly and safely.
