Chinese Scientists Discover New Bat Coronavirus with Human Transmission Potential

Chinese virologists have identified a new bat coronavirus using the same human receptor as COVID-19, potentially allowing animal-to-human transmission. The discovery led by Shi Zhengli, from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, highlights concerns of bio-research amid geopolitical tensions over alleged virus origins linked to the lab.

A team of Chinese virologists, led by Shi Zhengli from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, has discovered a new bat coronavirus capable of animal-to-human transmission. This virus uses the same human receptor as the virus causing COVID-19, raising concerns about potential outbreaks.

The new coronavirus, discovered in the Japanese pipistrelle bat, belongs to the merbecovirus subgenus, which includes the virus causing Middle East respiratory syndrome. The virus can bind to the human ACE2 receptor, similar to the SARS-CoV-2 virus responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic.

Amidst allegations of the Wuhan lab's involvement in COVID-19's origins, China's Foreign Ministry denies any gain-of-function studies on coronaviruses. However, recent media reports highlight USAID-funded research at the lab, reigniting debates over scientific governance and accountability in virological research.
