Odia Language Signboard Mandate Boosts Local Identity

The Odisha government has mandated that all shops and commercial establishments in urban areas display signboards primarily in the Odia language. The Odisha government's recent directive compels urban shops and commercial establishments to prominently feature the Odia language on their signboards. This initiative seeks to highlight the local script and bridge language accessibility gaps for citizens.

Effective immediately, businesses must ensure that Odia script constitutes at least 60 percent of signboards' total area. This effort underscores the state's dedication to upholding its official language in public domains.

Compliant businesses can enjoy a five percent discount on trade license renewals. However, penalties amounting to ₹500 per day will be levied on establishments failing to comply beyond the stipulated grace period, prompting timely implementation of the measure.
