An early Friday morning landslide has claimed the lives of at least 21 individuals in the highland region of Papua New Guinea, according to Australian media sources.
The tragedy struck around 2 a.m. as inhabitants of the village of Kukas in Enga province were asleep, flattening homes in its path, as reported by the Australian Broadcasting Corp., citing local police.
Enga Governor Peter Ipatas relayed to ABC that local reports suggested as many as 30 fatalities, although police confirm 21 deaths. As calls to Ipatas and the local police remain unanswered, the full extent of the disaster is yet to be determined.
