Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin has launched the Mamallan reservoir project designed to bolster Chennai's water resources. Situated near Nemmeli, this initiative is set at an impressive cost of Rs 342.60 crore.
A key component of the city's water infrastructure, the Mamallan reservoir is the sixth dam for Chennai, strategically located to capture excess floodwater currently lost to the sea. The Kovalam sub-basin site spans 5,161 acres and is expected to supply 17 crore litres of water daily to the city.
Among the project's significant developments is the renovation of 18 km of the Buckingham Canal, enhancing water retention and preventing sea water intrusion. The initiative, with Coastal Regulation Zone clearance expected by 2025, aims to supplement Chennai's existing water network which includes other reservoirs and desalination plants.
