Pune's Gas Crematoriums Closed Amid LPG Shortages

The Pune Municipal Corporation has temporarily closed the city's gas crematoriums due to LPG shortages caused by the West Asia conflict. Propane and butane, crucial for LPG, are being prioritized for domestic supply. Electric and wood-fired crematoriums will remain operational to serve the public.

The Pune Municipal Corporation has temporarily shuttered city gas crematoriums as LPG supplies dwindle amid the ongoing conflict in West Asia. Key component shortages are linked to the US-Israel-Iran tensions, hampering regional exports.

In response, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has mandated prioritization of propane and butane for residential LPG distribution nationwide, prompting Pune to close gas crematoriums since March 5, according to a civic official.

To minimize public disruption, electric and wood-fired crematoriums, fitted with air pollution control systems, remain operational. Despite the closure of three gas-fired furnaces at the Vaikunth crematorium, five electric units are still available.
