Tragic circumstances unfolded near Talakona Reserve Forest as two sub-adult Asian elephants met their demise due to electrocution. The incident occurred early Monday in Tirupati district, according to the local forest department.
The elephants, each approximately 12 years old, were discovered lifeless in the Talakona South Beat of Bhakarapeta range. Preliminary evidence suggests the animals came into contact with illegal electric snares placed near agricultural fields bordering the forest.
District Forest Officer V Saibaba reported that the snares were linked to a 33/11 kV transmission line and were allegedly set to protect farms. The SOPs of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change are being adhered to, with a case now registered for further investigation.
