Newborn Tiger Cubs Signal Conservation Triumph in Sariska

A tigress at the Sariska Tiger Reserve in Rajasthan has birthed three cubs, raising the reserve's tiger count to 53. This marks the tigress ST-17's second successful breeding, and symbolizes triumph in wildlife conservation, following a pioneering tiger relocation effort post-extinction in 2004-05.

A tigress in Rajasthan's Sariska Tiger Reserve recently gave birth to three cubs, bringing the total number of tigers in the area to 53, officials confirmed on Thursday. Initial observations suggest both mother and cubs are in good health.

This is the second successful breeding for tigress ST-17, whose offspring were captured in camera trap photos and videos in the reserve's Akbarpur range. Forest Minister Sanjay Sharma hailed the births as a conservation success story.

Once extinct due to poaching, Sariska's tiger population began recovering in 2008 due to a groundbreaking relocation program. Ongoing management efforts, including intensive patrolling and village relocation, have played a crucial role in stabilizing tiger numbers.
