Delhi's Traffic Relief: Proposed Underpasses at Railway Crossings

The Delhi government plans feasibility studies for underpass construction at congested railway crossings. This initiative aims to alleviate traffic jams, particularly in Punjabi Bagh and Peeragarhi Chowk, improving commute times. Surveys will assess viability, considering infrastructure and vehicle load, potentially leading to tunnels or overbridges.

The Delhi government is set to assess the feasibility of constructing underpasses at key railway crossings as part of its comprehensive traffic decongestion strategy. Current congestion at about 8–10 crossings forces residents to take longer routes, exacerbating their commute time.

Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh highlighted the heavy vehicle load at these crossings and the potential for a tunnel beneath Punjabi Bagh and Peeragarhi Chowk. A five-kilometer railway line currently divides key regions, necessitating solutions such as tunnels or overbridges.

The PWD's survey will consider buildings, encroachments, trees, and road signage, including parking and timing details of crossing operations, to facilitate a comprehensive project proposal. This study forms part of a wider traffic decongestion plan, including potential flyovers in various locations of South Delhi.
