Project Him Sarovar: A Milestone in Water Security for Ladakh

Ladakh's Lieutenant Governor, Vinai Kumar Saxena, has launched the first artificial water body, Him Sarovar, aiming to tackle water scarcity. The project plans to develop 50 such water bodies, covering about 25% of villages in Ladakh, benefiting agriculture and promoting sustainable rural development.

Ladakh's Lieutenant Governor, Vinai Kumar Saxena, inaugurated the region's first artificial water body under Project Him Sarovar, aiming to boost water security. Developed at village Phikar, Stok, this marks the beginning of a plan to establish 50 water bodies across Leh and Kargil.

The reservoir, created from a restored, silted natural depression, was achieved through community efforts. It holds 35 lakh litres, benefitting 150 hectares of agricultural land. Saxena announced Stok's adoption as a model village for sustainable development, highlighting organic farming, solar energy, and enhanced tourism.

Saxena underscored the need for scientific water management, asserting the project will mitigate climate change impacts and ensure water reliability. He called for collaboration among government agencies, armed forces, and local communities for project success.
