New Firefly Species Illuminate Mawlynnong's Natural Heritage

Mawlynnong, celebrated as Asia's cleanest village, has made headlines again with the discovery of two new firefly species. According to officials, this marks the first scientific documentation of luminous insects in the region.
The groundbreaking study, spearheaded by Emma Magdalene Nonglang from Assam Don Bosco University, identified the species as Diaphanes meghalayanus and Diaphanes mawlynnong, the latter named after the village itself.
Researchers emphasized the importance of these discoveries, as fireflies often serve as indicators of ecological health, pointing to the rich biodiversity and conservation potential within Meghalaya's habitat.
