A preliminary investigation by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has revealed potential deviations from approved building plans and safety norms at a residential building in Vivek Vihar, where a fire tragically claimed nine lives, including a toddler, on Sunday.
Officials disclosed on Tuesday that the building’s layout application was initially approved in September 2013, but it lacked a completion certificate. This absence raises questions about modifications undertaken during construction. The sanctioned plan allowed for four units on a 532 square meter plot, but the building might exceed this with more than six units, as per current findings.
Significant concerns involve escape routes, with officials noting that grills along the rear side hindered rescue efforts. Additionally, enclosed balconies violated norms mandated for exemption from Floor Area Ratio (FAR) calculations. Mayor Pravesh Wahi confirmed ongoing investigations, stressing that violations will lead to strict actions, urging residents to prioritize safety measures.
