Punjab, Haryana in grip of heatwave, Rohtak and Bathinda cross 46 degrees Celsius

Punjab and Haryana experienced a severe heatwave on Wednesday, with Rohtak breaching the 46 degrees Celsius mark and several other areas reaching temperatures above 45 degrees Celsius.

In many places across Punjab and Haryana, the maximum temperatures hovered close to 45 degrees Celsius.

In Chandigarh, the common capital of the two states, the maximum temperature soared to 44.4 degrees Celsius, 5 notches above normal, a nominal rise from Tuesday's 43.2 degrees Celsius, the Met office said.

A Met department official said Chandigarh's previous high was recorded at 46 degrees in May 2024.

In Haryana, Rohtak recorded the highest temperature in the state at 46.9 degrees Celsius, six notches above normal, Ambala registered a high of 45.8 degrees Celsius, seven notches above normal, and Hisar saw mercury rising to 45.4 degrees Celsius, four notches above normal.

Karnal's maximum temperature was 43.7 degrees Celsius, four degrees above normal, while Narnaul also braved a hot day at 45.6 degrees Celsius, three notches above normal.

Sirsa sizzled at 46.2 degrees Celsius, Bhiwani recorded a high of 44.5 degrees Celsius, while Gurugram's maximum settled at 44 degrees Celsius.

In neighbouring Punjab, Bathinda recorded the highest temperature in the state at 46.6 degrees Celsius, followed by Amritsar at 43.6 degrees Celsius, four notches above normal.

Ludhiana recorded a high of 44.1 degrees Celsius, over four degrees above normal, while Patiala recorded a high of 45 degrees Celsius, over five notches above normal.

Faridkot recorded a maximum of 44.5 degrees Celsius, while Ferozepur registered a maximum temperature of 42.6 degrees Celsius.
