Onion farmers, spearheaded by opposition leaders from Maha Vikas Aghadi, mounted a protest against the prevailing government procurement prices on Tuesday. The demonstration disrupted the Mumbai-Agra National Highway in Nashik district, with protesters blocking traffic.
Authorities intervened and detained the protesters after the 'Kanda Utpadak Shetkari Kranti Mahamorcha' led to a temporary standstill of vehicles in Chandwad town. Some demonstrators attempted to deflate the tires of stalled vehicles, marking a tense standoff.
Key opposition figures such as NCP MLA Rohit Pawar, Shiv Sena leader Ambadas Danve, and Congress's Harshvardhan Sapkal symbolically led the rally on a bullock cart before their detainment by police. The farmers' agitation underscores the demand for a fair Minimum Support Price and an inquiry into corruption allegations.
