Cambodia's $300 Billion Maritime Gamble: Energy, Dispute, and Hope

The escalating energy crisis, intensified by the Iran conflict's impact on global oil prices, has pressured Cambodia to resolve its prolonged maritime dispute with Thailand. Accessing undersea energy resources worth an estimated $300 billion depends heavily on settling this disagreement.

Energy Minister Keo Rottanak emphasized the crisis over the Strait of Hormuz spotlighting energy security's importance. The disputed Gulf of Thailand area, rich with oil and gas, remains a point of contention between Cambodia and Thailand, with recent tensions resulting in significant casualties.

Despite recent unilateral moves by Thailand, Cambodia plans to engage in UN-backed conciliation to reach an amicable agreement. Quick resolution is essential to attract investment for oil and gas exploration, as emphasized by Rottanak, given past setbacks in the energy sector.
