Workplace Relations and Safety Minister Brooke van Velden has announced a series of appointments to the Remuneration Authority, including the elevation of Dallas Welch to Chair, the reappointment of current member Vern Walsh, and the appointment of Wynand du Plessis as a new member.

The Remuneration Authority is an independent statutory body responsible for determining the salaries and allowances of key public office holders in New Zealand, including Members of Parliament, judges, and local government representatives.

Dallas Welch Appointed New Chair

Dallas Welch, who has served as a member of the Authority since 2021, will now take over as Chair following the conclusion of Geoffrey Summers' term. Mr Summers has served on the Authority since 2016 and held the role of Chair since 2022.

Announcing the appointment, Ms van Velden praised Ms Welch's extensive experience and expertise across public sector leadership and remuneration management.

"Ms Welch brings deep institutional knowledge, strong leadership and judgment. Her background spans chief executive recruitment, performance management, remuneration, and the development and production of official statistics," Ms van Velden said.

The Minister added that Ms Welch's blend of technical expertise and public service leadership experience made her well suited to guide the Authority in its important work.

"Ms Welch's technical skills and proven public service leadership make her well positioned to lead the Authority as its new Chair," she said.

Vern Walsh Reappointed for Further Term

Current Authority member Vern Walsh has also been reappointed for another three-year term, continuing a role he has held since 2022.

Ms van Velden said Mr Walsh's expertise in governance, finance, and local government administration has been highly valuable to the Authority's operations and decision-making processes.

"Mr Walsh has a deep knowledge of local government, governance and financial expertise, and provides valuable input and experience to the Authority. I am pleased he is continuing his role as member for a further term," the Minister said.

Wynand du Plessis Joins Authority

Joining the Authority as a new member is Wynand du Plessis, who will begin a three-year term.

Mr du Plessis currently serves as Group General Manager, Remuneration at Fletcher Building and brings extensive experience in remuneration governance and pay-setting systems across both corporate and consulting sectors.

"Mr du Plessis brings over a decade of remuneration leadership experience across corporate and consulting environments," Ms van Velden said.

"He is currently Group General Manager, Remuneration at Fletcher Building, with expertise in remuneration reviews, governance processes, and pay-setting frameworks."

The Minister said the combined expertise of the incoming and returning members would strengthen the Authority's ability to carry out its responsibilities independently and effectively.

"These appointments will make a significant contribution to the Authority, and I congratulate them," she said.

Tribute to Outgoing Chair Geoffrey Summers

Ms van Velden also acknowledged the contribution of outgoing Chair Geoffrey Summers, thanking him for his years of service and leadership.

"I would also like to thank outgoing Chair Geoffrey Summers for his leadership and commitment," she said.

The appointments come as the Remuneration Authority continues to play a critical role in ensuring transparent and independent pay-setting processes for New Zealand's public office holders.
