Kalpesh Patel, a farmer from Surat, transformed his agricultural practices by embracing natural farming methods after his father's cancer diagnosis and subsequent death linked to extensive use of chemical pesticides. This shift has not only increased his banana yields but also significantly reduced farming costs.
His success story, where a single banana bunch weighed 73 kg, has become a symbol of sustainability in agriculture, catching the eye of Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. Alongside governmental initiatives, these farming techniques have seen widespread adoption across Gujarat, with thousands of farmers joining the movement towards eco-friendly methods.
Having switched to natural farming seven years ago, Kalpesh now cultivates over 50 varieties of bananas on his land and processes surplus produce into commercial products like banana wafers and powder, effectively increasing his revenue stream. The Gujarat government supports farmers like him by promoting markets where natural products can be sold directly.
