Drone Strike heightens Tensions at Chornobyl's Nuclear Facility
A Russian drone hit a storage facility for spent nuclear fuel near Ukraine's abandoned Chornobyl plant. Ukrainian officials confirmed stable radiation levels. While the attack damaged a building, no fuel was present. This escalates nuclear safety concerns amid ongoing tensions between Ukraine and Russia.
A Russian drone has struck a storage facility for spent nuclear fuel near Ukraine's former Chornobyl power plant, according to Ukrainian authorities on Sunday. Despite the attack, radiation levels at the site remained stable.
Statements from Kyiv's General Staff and the state atomic agency revealed that while a container-receiving building sustained partial damage, no spent nuclear fuel was stored there during the incident. Additionally, a resultant fire was promptly extinguished without causing any injuries.
The Russian government has yet to comment on the alleged attack, which occurred approximately 15 km (9 miles) from the Chornobyl plant, the scene of the infamous 1986 nuclear disaster. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha condemned the act, criticizing what he described as Russia's ongoing nuclear blackmail and threats to nuclear safety.
