Global consumer goods brands like The Coca Cola, Nestle, Unilever and Diageo, which are operating in Africa, unveiled the ‘Africa Plastics Recycling Alliance’ at 2019 Africa CEO Forum that took place between March 24 and 26 in Rwanda’s capital, Kigali.

‘Africa Plastics Recycling Alliance’ intends to turn down the current challenge of plastic waste in the Sub Saharan Africa so that more jobs and commercial activities can be generated by improving the collection and recycling of plastics.

“We wish to tackle the threat plastics waste poses in Sub-Saharan Africa by turning this into an opportunity to create jobs, promote economic activity and reduce import dependency through improved collection and recycling,” The Coca Cola, Nestle, Unilever and Diageo said in a statement, as reported by The New Times.

Those brands will further engage with the investment community, policy-makers and others to accelerate the development and financing of the necessary waste management infrastructure and systems.

Researchers say that an average number of 100 million animals die each other due to discarded plastic. A report titled ‘New Plastics Economy’ made an estimation in 2016 that there will be more plastic than fish in the planet’s oceans by 2050.
