The Seattle Mariners placed left-hander James Paxton on the 10-day disabled list with a left forearm contusion, the team announced Wednesday.

Paxton left Tuesday's start against the Oakland Athletics in the first inning after taking a line drive off the forearm from Jed Lowrie, but X-rays were negative and the team called initially termed Paxton "day-to-day."

The Mariners will use right-hander Felix Hernandez, who was recently moved to the bullpen, as Paxton's replacement in the rotation. In a corresponding move, the Mariners recalled right-hander Christian Bergman from Triple-A Tacoma.

Paxton, 29 is 10-5 with a 3.68 ERA in 24 starts this season, though he has lost three of his past five starts.

Bergman, 30, went 0-1 with a 3.97 ERA in two starts for Seattle earlier this season.

Elsewhere, the Mariners will put Robinson Cano back in his familiar spot at second base against the A's on Wednesday, while moving Dee Gordon back to center field. Gordon played second on Tuesday while Cano played first base in his first game back from an 80-game suspension for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing drugs.

Prior to Tuesday, Cano had played all but one inning of his 14-year career at second base. He is expected to spend more time at other positions, with Gordon manning second, during the remainder of the regular season.

Cano is ineligible to play in the postseason due to the suspension.

Ryon Healy will play first on Wednesday, and Cameron Maybin -- who played center on Tuesday -- is not in the lineup.
