Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers will make his preseason debut Saturday, but defensive end Joey Bosa and guard Forrest Lamp will be held out with injuries, head coach Anthony Lynn told reporters Thursday.
Bosa has been out nine days since suffering a foot injury during practice that was deemed "nothing serious." After being activated from the physically unable to perform list, Lamp practiced on Monday for the first time since tearing his anterior cruciate ligament last August.
Starting cornerback Trevor Williams, who sprained his left ankle early in camp, will also sit out when the Chargers host the Seattle Seahawks.
The Chargers have played Rivers in two of four preseason games each year since 2015. The 36-year-old has not missed a regular-season game since taking over as the starter in 2006, a streak of 192 consecutive starts.
Bosa, 23, missed the first four games of his rookie season in 2016 due to injury but has played all 28 games since. Lamp, 24, has not played in a game of any kind since the Chargers took him in the second round last year.
Williams, who turns 25 next month, has played in 28 games through two NFL seasons, including all 16 games (15 starts) last season, when he tallied two interceptions and 13 passes defensed.
Meanwhile, Lynn told reporters Wednesday that the kicking competition between free agent signees Caleb Sturgis and Roberto Aguayo is extremely tight, with in-game performances likely to be the deciding factor.
"I'd love to make the decision sooner than later," Lynn said. "I really would. But it's so close right now.
"... It's a long battle. ...We'll see how it plays out in games. What a player does in games, to me, is what I evaluate the most."
Sturgis handled both of the team's field-goal attempts in the preseason opener, making from 45 yards and missing from 41. Aguayo kicked off four times, producing one touchback, and hit both extra-point attempts.
Sturgis, who turned 29 last week, has hit 81.0 percent of field-goal attempts in his five-year career with the Miami Dolphins and Philadelphia Eagles.
Aguayo, 24, hit 22 of 31 (71.0 percent) field-goal attempts as a rookie with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who traded up to take him in the second round of the 2016 draft. He was cut last year after a battle, which was captured by HBO's Hard Knocks, with veteran Nick Folk.
