Report: Giants' Posey likely to have hip surgery

San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey is likely to have season-ending hip surgery, according to a San Francisco Chronicle report on Tuesday.

"I'd say that that's a safe assumption," executive vice president of baseball operations Brian Sabean told the Chronicle of surgery for Posey, who has battled hip issues throughout the season.

Manager Bruce Bochy was less definitive but confirmed the team has discussed the possibility.

"I'll be honest with you," Bochy told the Chronicle. "We have discussed that. We talked about it. Nothing's been determined yet. Because we want him ready for next year. We're discussing that now."

Bochy added that a decision on specifics is coming "really soon," and a surgery would address the labrum and clean out bone spurs. The report adds that Posey has been battling soreness in the hip since a road trip in late May, which has lingered and affected him at the plate and behind it.

Posey, 31, was not in the Giants' lineup Tuesday night against the New York Mets after catching 13 innings on Monday night. He has played in 103 of 127 games this season but sat out the All-Star Game after having a cortisone shot to relieve inflammation in his right hip.

"It's something that obviously bugs me still, which I deal with," Posey said, per the Chronicle, which added the catcher is expected to start Wednesday. "It's better some days than others. Some days it's cranky. Thirteen innings isn't the best for it. Right now, we're going day to day. We'll see where we're at tomorrow and the next day."

The issue has been a factor in Posey's dip in power numbers this season, as his five homers and .386 slugging percentage are easily the lowest marks of his career in any season in which he's played 100 games. He hasn't homered since the cortisone injection entering the All-Star break, and he has slugged just .315 during that span.

Posey still managed to earn his sixth All-Star selection, all in the last seven years, and he's batting .286 with 40 RBIs on the season.

The Giants entered Tuesday seven games out of a wild-card spot and 7 1/2 games out of the NL West lead, but Sabean said the team won't factor its ability to contend into the decision about surgery for Posey.

"It's not going to make any difference where we are in the standings because it's been debilitating for him to this point," Sabean told the Chronicle.
