New York Giants special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey announced Thursday he was diagnosed with cancer this offseason and is undergoing treatment, including chemotherapy.

McGaughey, 45, is in his first year with the team after spending the last two years holding the same post in Carolina. He has maintained his day-to-day position while going through the treatment process, though 2017 coordinator Tom Quinn -- who was previously fired -- returned as an assistant to assist McGaughey.

"I'm not going to let chemotherapy or cancer get in the way of what I do," McGaughey told reporters Thursday. "I'm a father and I'm a football coach. That's what I do."

McGaughey's specific diagnosis wasn't disclosed. Giants general manager Dave Gettleman announced this offseason he was diagnosed with lymphoma, which he said in July was in remission.

McGaughey was previously the Giants' assistant special teams coordinator from 2007 to 2010, and he has also been the special team's coordinator for the Houston Texans (2003-04), New York Jets (2014) and San Francisco 49ers (2015) as he enters his 14th season coaching in the NFL.

He spent parts of two seasons in the NFL as a defensive back with the Cincinnati Bengals and Philadelphia Eagles from 1996-97.
