Royals top White Sox in 10 innings on bunt, errant throw

Alcides Escobar had two RBIs without a hit, including the game-winning sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the 10th inning, as the Kansas City Royals rallied for a 4-3 win over the visiting Chicago White Sox on Monday in the first of a three-game series between the American League Central rivals at Kauffman Stadium.

Brian Goodwin opened the 10th inning with a double to the right field corner and was at second when Escobar bunted to Chicago reliever Jeanmar Gomez. Gomez tried to get the out at third and instead threw the ball away, allowing Goodwin to score the winning run on fielder's choice.

Jake Newberry (2-0), the third of three Kansas City pitchers, got the win after an inning of no-hit, one-strikeout relief.

Gomez (0-2) took the loss for the White Sox.

Neither starting pitcher -- Lucas Giolito for Chicago nor Jakob Junis for the Royals -- figured into the decision, even though both pitched well enough to win.

Giolito allowed three runs on six hits and two walks over seven innings while striking out three.

Junis one-upped him by throwing eight innings of three-run, seven-hit baseball in which he fanned five and did not walk a batter.

The Royals jumped to the lead in the bottom of the first inning on Whit Merrifield's solo home run. Kansas City then added to that advantage when Escobar flew into a force out in which Jorge Bonifacio scored from third base.

The White Sox quickly erased that deficit and took the lead via the long ball. Adam Engel led off the inning with a homer over the center field fence. Two outs later, Daniel Palka's round-tripper into the right field bleachers chased home Jose Abreu and pushed the White Sox in front 3-2.

Kansas City tied the game in the sixth on Ryan O'Hearn's one-out solo home run.

Abreu had three of Chicago's eight hits. Alex Gordon and Goodwin had two hits each to lead the Royals' eight-hit attack.
