LONDON, Sept 11 (Reuters) - England's James Anderson became the most successful fast bowler in Test history when he bowled Mohammed Shami to seal victory against India at The Oval on Tuesday.
It was 36-year-old Anderson's 564th test wicket in 143 matches, taking him ahead of Glenn McGrath.
Anderson had moved level with the Australian great on Monday when he dismissed Shikhar Dhawan and Cheteshwar Pujara in the same over.
He remained tantalizingly stuck on 563 against fierce Indian resistance on Tuesday but returned late in the day with the new ball to take the tourists' final wicket and clinch a 118-run win together along with a 4-1 series triumph for England.
With the crowd roaring him on, Anderson ripped out Shami's middle stump with a trademark ball that nipped back off the seam.
He is now fourth on the all-time list behind a trio of spinners - Muttiah Muralitharan (800), Shane Warne (708) and Anil Kumble (619).
"I'm just happy to win the game. I wasn't even thinking about the record," Anderson, who played in his first test in 2003, said after receiving a standing ovation.
