Galatasaray parted ways with veteran head coach Fatih Terim on Monday, the Istanbul club said, ending his fourth spell with the 22-times Turkey champions amid a disappointing season. Galatasaray lie 12th in the top tier Turkish Super Lig after suffering their seventh defeat of the season on Saturday, losing 1-0 at home to Giresunspor. They have won just one of their last five matches.

Terim, 68, was hired in 2017 after leaving his job as Turkey head coach following a public brawl. He has been at the helm of the national team three times. Galatasaray Chairman Burak Elmas thanked Terim for his work at the club and said they would continue to seek his ideas and guidance in the future.

"As mutually agreed with our dear Coach Fatih Terim, as of today he will no longer continue the position of Head Coach that he currently holds," Elmas said in a statement. Terim, also a former coach of Fiorentina and AC Milan, was previously in charge of Galatasaray between 1996-2000, 2002-2004 and 2011-2013. In his second stint with Turkey, he led them to the Euro 2008 semi-finals.

Galatasaray won the UEFA Cup with Terim in 2000. The club, the most decorated of Turkey's "Big Three", were runners-up in the Super Lig last season, edged out by rivals Besiktas on goal difference.

After 20 matches, Trabzonspor sit atop the Super Lig with 49 points, 10 points clear of second-placed Konyaspor. Basaksehir, the 2019-20 champions, follow in third and the Fenerbahce - the third big club in Istanbul and Galatasaray's bitter rivals - sit fourth.
