While March may have seen varying degrees of madness over the years, last season's unprecedented antics will be hard to beat, although there are a few teams that could surprise us all. Reviewing the college basketball odds can be a great way to get a sense of how the teams are stacking up in preparation for the season's most exciting tournament.

Traditionally, March Madness has shaken up the status quo with top teams being knocked out early and the occasional win from a side that nobody saw coming.

Top teams tipped for triumph

While the tournament's outcome is famously uncertain, the Purdue Boilermakers are this year's favorites to win according to the college basketball odds, this is largely due to their center, Zach Edey, he has been scoring consistently enough that he is on track to win his second Wooden Award if he can maintain his form.

The Boilermakers have also lucked out with their most recent transfer, Lance Jones, who joined the team from Southern Illinois. He has proved a sterling addition to the team, delivering strong defense with an uncanny ability to snatch the ball from the opposition before they have seen him coming.

At the moment, the Boilermakers' closest rivals appear to be last year's winners, the UConn Huskies. As five-time National Champions, they will be keen to take the top spot for the second time in a row, but the pressure of defending the title cannot be underestimated.

If there were ever a time for the Huskies to pull it out of the bag, this would be it. Donovan Clingan has breathed new life into the defense while Stephone Castle has been holding his own as a high scorer.

More to watch

Whilst most bookies agree that Purdue and UConn have the edge, there are plenty of other teams that could be in with a shot at winning including:

Houston Cougars - consistently somewhere around the top of tables, the Cougars are worth watching. Their defense is strong and has earned a reputation for their ability to turn a rebound into a scoring opportunity, but their shot selection could limit their success.

Arizona Wildcats - with two recent wins, the Wildcats are coming back from a dry spell with high hopes of hitting the top spot. They recently fought back against Utah to win after triple overtime and took on Colorado shortly afterward with a high-altitude performance that impressed even the most cynical fans.

Gonzaga Bulldogs - as long-time contenders, it has been more than a quarter of a century since the Bulldogs failed to make the grade for March Madness. Sadly, it looks as though this streak may be coming to an end as the team is struggling to maintain its form without star player Drew Timme.

Kentucky Wildcats - with an unprecedented perimeter scoring rate for this season, the Kentucky Wildcats are more of a prospect than some commentators might have expected. The dominating presence of Ugonna Onyenso may be the answer to the team's defensive prayers, but the rest of the team will have to put in a lot of work to stay the course in this contest.

Indiana State Sycamores - while there are some big names taking the majority of the limelight in this pre-tournament period of speculation, teams like the Sycamores are beginning to appear on the bookies' radars. With Josh Schertz at the helm, canny fans have spotted a potential opportunity to capitalize on the exceptional performances put in by Robbie Avila.

North Carolina Tar Heels - hungry for a chance to redeem themselves after missing out in 2023, the Tar Heels have got a lot to prove. The odds suggest that the team could be back on form, but fans are worried about the potential for their defense to let them down under pressure.

Auburn Tigers - this team's odds have shortened over the last couple of months, reflecting their recent good form and consistent performances with particular reference to Tre Donaldson's contributions. Their recent loss to Florida could have been a setback had it not come hot on the heels of a truly triumphant victory over long-time rivals Alabama.

While there are no certainties in any tournament, March Madness is traditionally a time for some of the outliers to have their moment in the sun. The college basketball odds are a great way to get a feel for the teams involved, but even the most knowledgeable fans have been surprised in the past.

For anyone who wants to make March Madness even more exciting, there is still all to play for in this year's tournament, so it's a great time to get in on the action.
