Free agent infielder Cory Spangenberg agreed to a one-year deal with the Milwaukee Brewers, multiple media outlets reported Thursday.

According to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal and MLB.com, the contract would pay Spangenberg $1.2 million if he is in the major leagues, $250,000 if he is in the minor leagues.

Spangenberg, 27, has one option remaining, meaning his new team could send him to the minors without the risk of losing him. Spangenberg has played all five of his big league seasons with the San Diego Padres. The left-handed hitter appeared in 116 games this year, batting .235 with a .298 on-base percentage, a .362 slugging percentage, seven homers and 25 RBIs.

In 387 career games, Spangenberg has a .258/.318/.391 batting line with 27 home runs and 109 RBIs. San Diego released him last month while clearing spots on its 40-man roster for newly promoted prospects.

While the majority of his action has come at third base and second base, Spangenberg also has made brief appearances at left field, right field and shortstop. He evened pitched in two games last season, allowing three runs in two innings.

Two of the infielders on the Brewers' roster for the National League Championship Series this year, third baseman Mike Moustakas and second baseman Jonathan Schoop, are no longer with the team.

Moustakas remains a free agent, while Schoop signed a free agent deal with the Minnesota Twins earlier this month. Travis Shaw, who plays third and second, and Hernan Perez, who plays second, are still with Milwaukee.
