Buffalo Bills running back LeSean McCoy didn't start Sunday's game against the New England Patriots due to what he termed a "situation" with coach Sean McDermott.
Undrafted rookie Keith Ford drew the start, and McCoy entered on the second offensive play.
"Coach, we had a situation, and he was totally right," McCoy told reporters after the 24-12 loss to the Patriots. "It was a private situation. I'm a captain and I gotta be more accountable. Simple as that. He checked me, put me in place. That was it."
McCoy did not reveal when the "situation" occurred, but said he and McDermott resolved it. McCoy rushed for just 9 yards on six carries against the Patriots. Ford gained 33 yards on seven rushes.
The 30-year-old McCoy has just 488 rushing yards with one game to play and is practically assured of a career-low total.
But he expressed dismay over a question leading up to the game against the Patriots regarding whether he was still the team's feature back. The question occurred after McDermott told reporters he wanted to give Ford more work. "C'mon man," McCoy told reporters. "Am I the feature back? Am I gonna come off the bench?"
Ford and McCoy were Buffalo's only healthy running backs on Sunday. Chris Ivory (shoulder) missed his second straight game while Marcus Murphy (elbow) was placed on injured reserve on Tuesday.
Quarterback Josh Allen is the Bills' leading rusher with 536 yards.
