Ireland has appointed Heimir Hallgrimsson, the former boss of Iceland and Jamaica, as their new men's head coach just ahead of the UEFA Nations League and World Cup qualifying campaigns. Hallgrimsson's first game will be against England on September 7th in Dublin.
'Ireland is a proud footballing nation known for its talented players and unforgettable moments at major international tournaments,' Hallgrimsson noted. 'We have a young and exciting team with genuine potential. I look forward to working closely with the players to help improve performances and results, ensuring regular qualification and competition at major tournaments.'
'I also look forward to getting to know the people of Ireland, particularly the wonderful fans of Irish football,' he added. The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) cited Hallgrimsson's experience, track record of improving international rankings, and history of qualifying for major tournaments as key reasons for his appointment.
The 57-year-old had previously co-coached Iceland with Lars Lagerback, making headlines by eliminating England in the Euro 2016 last-16 and reaching the quarter-finals. Under his leadership, Iceland reached their highest FIFA ranking of 18th. Hallgrimsson resigned from his role as Jamaica's head coach after their group-stage exit at the Copa America, but he successfully moved them from 64th to 53rd in world rankings.
