Luis Díaz couldn't contain his excitement and tears when discussing James Rodríguez, Colombia's key player heading into the Copa America final against Argentina on Sunday.

“From the moment I arrived at the national team, I let him know that he has always been my idol,” said Díaz. The 27-year-old Liverpool winger grew up admiring Rodríguez, who turns 33 on Friday.

As a teenager, Díaz witnessed James' sensational performance at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, where Rodríguez won the Golden Boot. Despite a poor season at Sao Paulo, Rodríguez has reemerged as Colombia's pivotal player in the Copa America under coach Néstor Lorenzo.

Once an afterthought, James is now central to Colombia's Copa aspirations, which rest on the combined talents of Díaz, Jefferson Lerma, and Daniel Muñoz. It will be Colombia's first Copa America final since winning the title as hosts in 2001.

James has a goal and six assists, surpassing Lionel Messi's record for the most assists in a single Copa America edition since records began in 2011. As he faces Messi in the final, James aims to lead Colombia to victory and secure the coveted title.
