Gareth Southgate, the head coach of the England football team, is facing uncertainty regarding his future as his contract nears its end this year. Since taking on the role in 2016, Southgate has led the Three Lions to top tournaments, but glory has remained elusive.
England had a golden opportunity to claim their first title under Southgate when they reached the final of the last Euro edition. However, Italy thwarted their ambitions, denying England a major trophy since 1966. Despite their struggles in the ongoing edition, England has secured a place in the final in Berlin.
Addressing his future ahead of the final, Southgate told Sky Sports, "Emotionally, it would be impossible for me to make a logical decision at the moment on any of that because my sole focus for two years has been winning this tournament." He added, "The last five or six weeks have been an absolute rollercoaster, so I don't actually know where I am with anything other than being very focused on preparing the team for this game."
Southgate conveyed his determination to lead the team with the same commitment he has shown over the past month. "I'm determined to keep leading them in the way I have over the last month," Southgate stated. He emphasized his goal of improving English football, acknowledging the significance of a potential victory for both the general public and those involved in the sport.
"We've improved the credibility of English football in how it's perceived around the world, but ultimately, until you win that trophy, there will always be questions," Southgate remarked. England is set to face Spain in the final at Olympiastadion Berlin on Sunday.
